I know that living in New York City can feel like living life in the fast lane sometimes, but you should still enjoy it. Perhaps you don’t understand why you aren’t enjoying it as much as you could-you just know you feel “stuck”. Happily, there is ample evidence that the brain is wired for pleasure and that you can “reorganize” your brain to have new, satisfying experiences. Therapy is a time to explore and change negative patterns of thinking and behavior. Simply put, it helps you understand what makes you tick and how that affects your interaction with the world. As you gain insight into yourself, unwanted symptoms and old patterns disappear. You develop new strategies, stronger coping skills, and a greater sense of personal control.
Couples counseling or marriage counseling provides you with the same opportunity for change. We all hold onto old beliefs, expectations, what roles we played in our families, and then bring them into new relationships. You may have thought you could get all the support and compassion you need from friends or family. Support and compassion yes, but it’s not the same as a skilled therapist who is trained to be objective and non judgmental.
If your image pf psychotherapy is what you have read or seen in a movie, remember; that is pure fiction. I like to listen but I also like to actively engage. I do this with compassion, warmth, expertise, and although I take my job seriously, not every moment in my office has to be serious.
Considering therapy is a big decision. Even the idea of it may make you feel anxious, so ask lots of questions and take your time to make an informed decision based on what feels right for you. If you think that coming to therapy means you are “crazy” or “weak”, quite the opposite is true. Acknowledging that you need some guidance and support is a sign of strength. And let’s be honest-we all need extra support at different times in our lives.
